atm I'm also using Guix as an alternative package manager on Debian and it works seamlessly with any linux distro. So you can play around with it without hoping distribution.
I bet this could have happened many years ago and i wonder what made them change their minds cause obviously they don't give a fuck about pollution. maybe it's cheaper?
you can also try the preinstalled Pop_OS for a bit. they optimize it for thinkpads afaik and it's based on Ubuntu. But in the end you've got my respects if you eventually run Gentoo, keep in my mind that the compile times on some programs may take too long on laptops though.
