I haven't personally witnessed anything violent, but yeah. had about $300 worth of packages stolen off my doorstep last month, but that's nothing compared to a car and two phones. I'm glad you weren't hurt, I can't imagine having a gun pulled on me once, let alone twice in as many months.

considering the amount of stress the pandemic has caused, I think a lot of people are hitting their breaking point. hell, just last week I was online shopping for a handgun to alt+F4 myself due to financial stuff.

stay safe out there, man.

I'm a diy slut so I just made my faraday bag with flat sheets of aluminum foil folded over several times (6-8 sheets seems to shield it just fine) lining an entire purse. I have yet to find a tag it doesn't work on; I imagine if there was a tag out there fitted with gps it would go off, but I have yet to see one and it seems prohibitively expensive to outfit every item in a store w/ gps tech unless you're apple or smth.

a good way to check if a faraday bag works is to put your cell phone in it, close the bag, and see if it still rings when called. if it doesn't, congrats! if it does, make sure there aren't any gaps in the fabric/foil/whatever. tbh though, with most pole sensors (those things on either side of a door heading in/out of a store) you only need to have coverage on the sides+bottom of the bag because unlike radio waves caused by cell phones which are coming from every direction, these waves are just bouncing btwn the two poles. watch out for sensors on the ceiling though! I usually tilt my bag to the side if I'm leaving through an overhead sensor because closing my purse doesn't always create a full seal.

as for getting tags off, it depends on the tag. there are (or at least, there were) videos on yöutübe showing how to remove some of the most common types with brute force or power tools. you can also buy the two most common tag detachers(hook and golf) on Wish for <20 usd! they take a while to ship, but imo it's worth not having to burn/drill through the plastic or bend a fork trying to pry it off.

best of luck to you, if you need more info I'd be happy to elaborate!

honestly, with summer coming up now seems as good a time as any to boost clothes. shops are opening back up but with limited staff stretched thin; you can get tag detachers off Wish for <20 usd. sites like pöshmärk or dëpöp are great for selling. happy hunting!

(late, but) not sure if they've got LP and it seems to depend on the associate whether or not they count items. if it's busy, they're less likely to. tag sensors are sometimes a strip on the ceiling rather than towers at the doors, so if you employ a faraday bag/tinfoil situation make sure the tag is covered on all sides.

you'll need a way to get the tags off as almost(?) every item is tagged, but with the aisles being so slim you can get some good blind spots. my local Plato's has the typical 'glance at you once then go back to talking' type young adult cashiers, but ymmv.

hell yea! aside from canvas, 90% of the art supplies I use are lifted. I feel like it takes a lot of the pressure off the creative process; I'm not constantly thinking "I have to make this a masterpiece, because if it doesn't sell I'm out [x amount of money spent on supplies]!"

i haven't seen many cams in my local stores. mostly situated in the pharmacy/electronics area. home goods and toys are both great places to conceal!

go-to method: use a wood burning tool to melt the plastic off the top of magnet tags so you can get inside the guts and pull out the spring that keeps it locked. smells like shit so you'll have to open a window (or do it outside lmao) but it keeps you from getting blisters trying to pry the tag off manually; even when using pliers or a bolt cutter those things are tough.

i've never seen Fresh Market tag their stuff, in my store there aren't a lot of cameras and it's easy as hell to conceal in the aisles, but i imagine that varies a little depending on the area. there aren't a lot of employees on the floor unless they're giving out samples or restocking.
