I don't know if you have it implemented over there, but in most of the stores that have self-service checkouts in the UK you have to put the item you've scanned into a bagging area, and that bagging area weighs the item. I've never stole via the self-checkout method (YET), but i'm pretty sure if the item you've scanned (which may be a different, much cheaper item) doesn't exactly match the weight of the same item that is physically placed in the bagging area, it won't allow you to progress with your purchases and advises that a member of staff come over.
Just curious really. It seems a hard one to get around!
