This is a messed up way to determine school placement.

I like the answer that the columnist here gave. Motivated and engaged parents are really the only thing that can change public school momentum at the local level in the U.S. Putting your kids into public school, then advocating for progressive ed policies with other like-minded parents is likely to work on a large enough scale.

I think that the author of the piece might agree with you: "Doctors say [school refusal] should be treated with flexibility and therapy – not punishment."

Reply to Study Shows Black Students, Kids With Disabilities in Missouri Punished More Than Peers by An_Old_Big_Tree
I've seen other studies that shows this disparity with suspensions starts as early as pre-school. Why are there even ANY suspensions for that age? Or any age? Suspensions are an awful discipline practice.

Do you have an example of this trend?

The one suspension that I've read about resulting from an anthem protest was rescinded a few days later. I'm sure a school district lawyer sat the principal down and explained exactly how hard the school would get sued!

"...half of American children experience at least one adversity such as physical abuse or food insecurity, and 1 in 5 experience at least two."
Trauma-informed education is becomming a larger part of the average teacher's day. We'll pay a little more attention when things like Las Vegas and Maria happen, but hopefully some of that same awareness sticks for those students that live trauma every day.

Reply to Betsy DeVos' Vision Goes Way Beyond Privatizing Education—And She Is Alarmingly Close To Realizing It by chaos
I actually think DeVos will have less (and less harmful) impacts as Education Sec. than she did as a private philanthropist. Still scary she has the job, though.

Server. I waited tables for two years in college, and apart from the crappy pay and low social standing, it was the best job I ever had.
Maybe I could get together with the farmer and the cook and work something out!

Reply to Central Florida schools prepare for Puerto Rican students displaced by Maria by What_the_What
Florida might be ready to handle these newcomer's needs, but other states (already failing, to varying degrees, their ESOL students) are going to struggle to give these kids proper support.

Since you posted this, I have been reading about this school and its history and I'm blown away. I have so many questions. I want to teach at a school like this. I want to have gone to a school like this. This is just so amazing.
