You ever see a Taiwanese movie called A Brighter Summer Day? You might like it if you haven't seen it already.

Shawna Yang Ryan "borrowed" some of that movie for her anti-KMT novel Green Island.

I feel for these people, but developing/improving living standards in many areas is impossible without tearing some of those structures down. About a minute from where I live there's another such community at the foot of Li Yu Mountain in downtown Taitung City. The toilets from this community flush directly into the nearby canal, and there's no way to fix them without razing the entire place.

I also want to add that I don't upvote or downvote. In my opinion it leads to groupthink. I comment on posts I find interesting, and I ignore posts I don't find interesting or just don't agree with. Spamming is not cool, and it's usually obvious when it's happening. Aside from that have at it.

I'm about 1/4 of the way through it. The first few chapters talk about China's pre-revolutionary history, and I just finished the Korean War chapter this morning. I think a lot of his points regarding regional geopolitics are very interesting. Stuff I hadn't heard or thought about before.
