I like the chain mail idea and it's something I make somewhat regularly as a hobby, do you think it's viable with most materials being sans nickel? for anybody interested, you can swing by your favorite craft store and find bags of "jump rings" in various sizes and quantities, a tool called a jump ring opener and some flat nose or chain nose pliers (all in the jewellery making area). All of this together can easily be pocketed and you would then have everything you need to whip up some chain mail of your own!

A stack of home depot magnets will remove the little cable alarm on the shoes with no problem, just remember to push the cable into the lock before pulling it out. They also make short work of the disk type ink stages. Some stores have have people at the dressing room that will count your items before entering, some don't. If yours is the latter, just take a few extra clothing items into the dressing room, remove the tags and conceal the items you are taking, leave the dressing room and hang the extra clothes you brought in on the racks outside the dressing rooms. If they do have people counting the clothes I would find a blindspot, conceal, then head to the dressing room with some extra clothes.

Michaels or hobby lobby have gold plated chains in the jewelry making departments that are quite easy, the gold core ones are pretty muchimposible, you have to bring a card from the shelf to the registers for those.

Lowes doesn't sell anything close to strong enough. Home depot, hobby lobby and michaels all carry rare earth magnets that can usually get the job done.
