Why yes, I do think it looks like the EZLN flag and the intersex flag combined. How did you know?

I'm one of the recent Reddit transplants. I was checking out some of the other communities here, found one I like. It's nice to participate.

I mean, national flags are, by definition, nationalist, and the left generally opposes nationalism, so that makes sense.

Reply to As a follow-up to my last post, here's another flag that utilizes the method of cutting out the emblem/symbol. This flag was used in the Romanian Revolution of 1989 by the revolutionaries. by treesparrow
This is a pretty cool method of making flags to express general opposition to the status quo, in my opinion. In hostile conditions, such as in an active political upheaval, the making of a new flag, complete with its own symbols and colors, is rather difficult. As such, this method can substitute as least for a while to communicate political intent and position. As flags, they fly absolutely terribly though, what with the giant hole and all :)

I probably should have made the gear and the sun the same colour, as for the green band I don't know why I put it there. The blue line is supposed to be like the atmosphere of a planet, separating it from space

The green is quite nice, but I wonder why there's a green band thing inside the yellow? What's the symbolism behind this? I get that it's supposed to represent something kinda solarpunk and ecological but the green band thing and the blue line are both head-scratchers. They, combined with the fact that there are two separate shade of yellow, make the flag a tad bit too over-complicated with regards to color imo.

Flags usually have a meaning behind them about cultures and nations; for obvious reasons, this doesn't link well with me. So, I'm fine with a black sheet.

Nah, I just made it up after I've seen someone else make a communist Toronto flag that just replaced the maple leaf with hammer and sickle.

shower thoughts response
-
most of the good flag designs have been taken by.. well, countries.
-
lack of universally understood symbols, i can come up with 5 and one of them goes back to soviet aesthetic
-
Flag design requires really strict adherence to design principals that are normally meant to be broken tastefully. This is not inherently bad design for a poster or a protest but as a flag it's cluttered and confusing.
i had some rambling thoughts but trunkating because they're not though out at all. Vox has an interesting 7min video on designing clear symbols wrt the biohazard symbol if anyones curious

The most important rule that seems to be broken constantly is "No text on flags".
If the symbols don't convey the message, you've chosen the wrong symbols.
Further, it demonstrates a sort of insecurity and cluelessness.

You have to project the confidence that people already know who you are so that initialisms, mottoes, and text are outright redundant.

Probably because so many of us abhor the whole concept of flag waving.

Some examples would be cool!
Personally I'm uncomfortable with all flags and wary of representation in general; probably don't think about this too much as a result.

Or if the leaf were more under the star, like it were a canoe.

It would be cooler if the star were engrained on a flat leaf
