In the Friday free talk, I mentioned the idea of organizing a raddle RPG group over voice chat. I figured it probably wouldn't work, but I did get some positive feedback, so I figured I might as well throw the idea out there.

Would people have any interest in doing that? What concerns might you have? Any recommendations for games to play and voice chat software to use if we do end up doing it?

I would like to participate, but only with those that are active members of the site, and whose username I can recognize. For voice chat, I heard Mumble is good for this, or matrix; i think it supports voice chat.

If we do it, the group will probably be limited to 6-ish people at least initially since larger groups get unwieldy, so I imagine it will only be active users. Mumble looks like a good choice, I'm gonna look into it a bit more. My only concern is that it requires a server.

I'd like to play some non-fantasy RPGs . How good would mastodon work for this? Anything with immediate messaging would probably work

Hadn't considered Mastodon, I'll look into how well that might work. Does it have any sort of voice feature, or just text? If we're going to just use text, I think the best choice might be to just use IRC or Matrix.

The game I was gonna suggest we play is Apocalypse World, which I guess may or may not meet the criterion of "non-fantasy" depending on how you define fantasy.

No, I don't think so.

By fantasy I mean elves, magic, enchanted swords, mythological creatures, DnD kind of stuff

Would you be comfortable doing it over voice, or would you prefer text?

I have some reservations about voice myself, as even without the privacy concerns I'm not sure how well my social anxiety will deal with talking to a bunch of internet anarchist I've never met; I'd like to hear other people's thoughts about it.

In that case, Apocalypse World would definitely not be fantasy. The only particularly fantastical thing (aside from still having usable gasoline 50 years after the apocalypse) is psionics.

I'm OK with voice, my microphone might not be great. Timezones might be an issue now that I think about it.

Yeah that's a good point about timezones. I guess we'd just have to try and work out a time that's good for everyone

I've used roll20 in the past, but I can't imagine it's great for privacy. I'd prefer to avoid forcing the group to use proprietary javascript if possible

i've only used it for a couple of hours for one DND session. maybe there is an open source alternative or something.

There's Vassal. It's a pain in the ass to set up and IIRC requires some direct connections, but afaik it's FOSS.
