A lot of this applies to all communication, obviously, but:

  • If you're sending pictures, don't take them with a smartphone. Take them with a camera or something else that does not have any kind of network connectivity.

  • Use an encrypted, p2p messaging platform. Do Not use a service like Wire or telegram with a centralized server, even if the clients and server are open source. Good options for this are GNU Ring or Tox.

  • Strip metadata from pictures. You can do this in GIMP.

  • Obviously, try to remove any personal data from messages and pictures. Obscure faces and don't use your real name. Don't use a username you've used somewhere else.

Is there something specific you're concerned about?

I think that pretty much covers it! But what about PGP encrypted email, even if it's over gmail?

It's not ideal, but it'll do in a pinch. PGP encryption is very good, but it's still not a bad idea to minimize the number of servers your data is going through.
