I have been thinking of this "best practices" fallacy a lot lately. I fall prey to it occasionally and its kind of insidious because it gives me a false sense of security. Not to mention I am probably going out of my way to protect things which probably don't even need to be. Sort of like the putting deadbolts on every door in the house analogy.
there was a podcast episode on live like the world is dying that was really good a large part due to how it emphasizes how security culture is a limiting factor and how to determine how strict you need to be. And most importantly helps in knowing when to be lax.
