I fully agree with this, I taught myself how to program when I was younger and that the courses I had at school about programming were completely useless and also discouraging the people around me.

Now I'm learning electronics and the same thing applies here for me, there's no point in learning all the simple small stuff only and then building simple useless things with that. I just find some large project that interest me and then dissect the whole into smaller parts until I reach the level of individual components and only if I've noticed a certain pattern of components enough I will be interested in it to learn about it.
