nihilism

Nihilism is the rejection of the principles of civilisation as such. Civilisation is the conscious culture of human reason, i.e. science and morals.

Nihilism might mean: velle nihil, to will the nothing, the destruction of everything, including oneself, and therefore primarily the will to self-destruction.

Let me tentatively define nihilism as the desire to destroy the present world and its potentialities, a desire not accompanied by any clear conception of what one wants to put in its place.

When the nihilists of the 19th century threw their bombs into crowds, they were acting from the expression of a pure negativity, from a radical and global refusal of society, anxiously awaiting the end times, the end of the world, of making a definite end to a life devoid of sense. There was something to destroy. More precisely: everything was to be destroyed.
