Proposal: Let us create raddle defashers

Submitted by ziq admin in meta (edited )

Mods that can IP ban spammers (and only spammers) site-wide without seeing anyone's IPs, as well as delete their entire post histories in one click.

Will be limited to 8 active users.

I don't see a thing wrong with this.
Anyone abusing it would, you know, be noticed pretty quickly and then shot down by you or /u/emma, probably.
I think it's a great idea!

Maybe the supermod bans could be limited to accounts less than a week old?

Yes, this seems like a good feature -- maybe even include a way to report a particular user and once this is done have a feature that allows for regular users to either agree or disagree with the ban. Limit those posts to only users who have been around for a week so the trolls don't make alt-accounts to skew the votes. Any user that does disagree with the vote will be given the time to give their reason as to why the ban should not go through.

Then each situation will be dealt with based from that. The idea needs some tinkering but I could see it working fairly well. Until trolls start to wait a week to try and ban regular users.

Seems vangaurd, and this is coming from a guy named after Stalin.

That being said, I'd like to apply.

Sure. But shouldn't we be using account bans instead of IP bans?

It's really easy to change your IP address, though. A simple reboot of the router usually accomplishes that. Plus, whoever is unlucky enough to get the old IP address would then be banned, even though they weren't the original user. It's even less effective if they're using Tor, and even more harmful for legitimate users when you IP-ban a Tor exit node. The only way I'd be okay with it is if we never ban a Tor exit node IP address, and limit the IP bans to one day, so that they'd still have to go through the trouble of rebooting their router, but an innocent person wouldn't later be IP banned for nothing.

Yeah, it would get frustrating for the troll after a while. I don't know if IP temp-bans are a thing right now, but if not, they should be.

we can set expiration dates on all ip bans, but I don't bother because I undo them all after a day or two.

I've banned more than 100 Tor IPs in the last 24 hours. I imagine a lot of Tor users are getting locked out at this point.

Why, though? Creating a new Tor identity is the easiest thing in the world, and you're hurting everyone who uses Tor by banning the IPs of exit nodes, not just the malicious users. I really think shadowbanning them would be more effective. I know you said that's dishonest, but I don't think we need to be honest with nazi trolls.

We don't have account bans yet, just IP bans. I do clear them out every couple of days though.

It'd be a nice feature to have; that and shadowbans. I'd love to contribute to raddle's code, but I'm unfamiliar with PHP and Symfony, and I don't have the stamina to learn another programming language right now.

I think emma said adding account bans would be very hard, and her time would be better spent implementing several new features in the time it would take her to add that one feature, so hopefully someone else that knows php can do it.

Shadow bans would be useful.

I have yet to get locked out, but I think it's a good thing for now, until we figure out a real way for dealing with spamming and trolls.

SUpport, esp because there was what I think (I didn't expand the thread) child porn posted in /f/queer and all i could do was remove the thread and ban them from /f/queer. And nobody was around who could site ban them.

So they went posting more porn in /f/feminism instead :-(

Will there be a public log of bans?

5

ziq wrote

Certainly, but I don't know how long it would take emma to implement that. We need the supermod function urgently.

amongstclouds wrote

Good idea. I think if we put any kind of ban process into place it needs to be as transparent as possible.

Rather than 'supermods' maybe we could give them another name

Nazi-deathbringers

Garbage-cleaners

I dunno, something like that

How about

  • Stasi
  • The Inquisition
  • The Thought Police

Then they get confirmation of what they really think we're about (which we're not) :-) LOL, well Defasher works too.

I don't particularly like the idea, but in the circumstances we're in, okay. I think some of the other people have good ideas, like the public list of bans.
