Renaming raddit.me to something more original [done]

Submitted by ziq admin in meta (edited )

A lot of people have voiced concerns that there could be a copyright claim made against us by a certain other website. While both us admins shouldn't be affected by US companies copyrights since we're not subject to their laws, it's possible they could pressure our registrar, which is an American company.

Anyway, even ignoring that potential issue - at this point a lot of people I've spoken to would really like to avoid the comparisons to reddit everyone keeps making. When this site started it was just a hastily flung together Wordpress blog with a dozen plugins, so calling ourselves the 'reddit for radical leftists' made sense and was good for arousing interest. Now it's so much more than a shitty Wordpress theme, and emma has managed to surpass reddit's code in a lot of ways. It doesn't do us any good being known as a reddit knock off.

I just got the radd.it domain from the previous owner, so moving the site to that address is a strong possibility. It wouldn't be a big departure name-wise, but the url doesn't have to be the name of the site - we can always change all the 'Raddit' text on the site to something else entirely, like maybe an acronym?

'RawAtomicDopeDrop' or something? Any better ideas?

Or we could just use the 'Radd' or 'Raddit' part of the title and add some characters to the end e.g. Radditalized, Raddppl, Radd-itch, Raddital, Radded, Raddica, Raddicals, Raddkats, Raddredd, Raddicular, Raddl, Raddle, Raddleft, Raddreds, Raddites...

We could also use the frog logo to inspire a name. RaddiToad?

Or we could not use radd.it and go with a different url entirely. Or just stick with raddit.me.

Thoughts?

EDIT: I should stipulate that the raddit.me url would still work - it would redirect you to the new url.

How about Raddish? It sounds similar to raddit, but without the association to reddit.

With Raddish, you wouldn't need to change the color scheme of the site (they are red), and a raddish logo / icon is simple and recognizable.

I say Raddish :)

Edit: Whoa, raddish.net domain is actually available!

Edit 2: If someone snags raddish.net before you get it, you could register raddi.sh.

Radd Forums? Just meaning radical, I guess
double d because why not, it's a quirky relfection of the history of the place :)

I support the idea of getting a name that doesn't position us in terms of something else, i think it would be a lot better

I like the word 'boards' better than forums, personally. Or RaddComm / RaddCommune / RaddCommunity / RaddSociety.

I like the sound of Raddital / Raditall.

What about Radditto?

Or 'Real Anarchist Dung Drawer' for an acronym.

Damn, now I have to train a ditto with that name in Pokemon.

having a backup URL outside of US juristiction is a good idea.

Leave it. Already lots of people know about it the way it is

I'm sure this domain would still work, it would just have an altered title at the top of the page and a second, shorter url you can use. It's actually smart to use multiple urls since the voat fash are mass reporting us right now to enom. Pirate sites usually maintain multiple urls that redirect, so that if one goes down the site can keep going without a hitch.

I second this; I have to problem with the name Raddit, and I don't like any of the alternatives.

I doubt they could pressure your registrar. Registrars aren't really in the business of caving in to demands from outside sources, they're in the business of making money.

Nah... https://torrentfreak.com/how-to-stop-domain-names-being-seized-by-the-us-government-110205/

Plus the registrar already sent ziq a legal letter because someone posted an SSN doxx here and voat losers mass reported it to them. They don't care too much about one 20 euro domain in the face of legal action / fed pressure.

Someone posted an SSN here?

ziq wrote (edited )

Yeah, they did. I took the post down and added a no SSNs rule. Those can be used for fraud / identity theft so it's a crime in the US (where the registrar is located).

Maybe we should switch registrars, then, or use something else like OpenNIC. We shouldn't let a domain registrar indirectly dictate what content can or can't appear on raddit.

Edit: OR, we could drop the domain name entirely, and just use a direct IP address, and the onion link that we already have. It'll be less convenient, but people could bookmark it in their browser.

That onion is slow as shit, idk how anyone can stand to use it.

It's pretty fast for me. Are all onions slow for you, or just this one?

-7

skoonat wrote

Yeah, they should only be able to do that for dangerous websites like white national or Nazi sites.

Was it on this sub?

no

[snip] Freshly renamed and I'm a mod there now since the founding mod is MIA.

it's temporary because voat is spamming links to the old address everywhere in an attempt to get us in shit. Now their links are all broken.

Tell you what. Let's see what happens at the start of the business day on the west coast today, Monday, and we'll go from there, alright pal?

ziq wrote

Shit all. Go back to voat, boy.

skoonat wrote

Secret is, your doxx sub isn't even the real problem you're going to have with eNom anymore. There's federal crimes afoot now big guy. Good luck with that.

4

ziq wrote

oh noes, not federal crimes!!

What a fucking joke.

BlackFlagged wrote

Yeah they're too childish to keep it to themselves. Blabbing about it all over voat like they've accomplished something.
