Could you maybe wait for me to get home from work before you press the panic button?

Well, that's just it. I have no way of knowing whether or not it's a case of you being afk, or if raddit really was served with a court order, and I'd rather not wait several days to find out if it's the latter. Please find a way to update it on the first day of the month (preferably at midnight UTC, for convention's sake), or if you can't do it then, see if there's someone who can. This is too important to update "whenever it's convenient."

I'll see if I can up an automated email to remind me to do it on the last day of the month, because I don't have time to do it in the morning before work on the 1st. I have a 2 hour commute.

They're in Cairo time zone, they'd have to get up in the middle of the night to do it at midnight UTC. Might be best to do it a day or two before the 1st.

That or find a way to schedule the update so that it updates at midnight UTC.

I don't think it should be automated - what if I get locked up, my hard drives are copied, but the computer is left on, and the canary updates itself even tho I'm compromised? (not that this would ever happen for various reasons I won't go into)

Exactly, automated is bad. I meant that you could tell it "Please post this in X hours" the night beforehand. If you don't explicitly tell it that on the last day of the month, it doesn't get updated.

Edit: My other comment wasn't clear; my apologies.

I live off grid and off-road in remote mountains in a country that doesn't answer to the axis of evil or their courts. There is 0 risk of me being served a secret government subpoena because no such thing exists here, and the 'communist' party is the biggest party in the country so there isn't any persecution of leftists that would compel the state to mess with raddit.

My (encrypted) system can't be tampered with without me instantly becoming aware of it.

raddit doesn't save any identifiable data other than the last IP you (or Tor) used anyway.

lol, I never even noticed that. It's just the default text in autocanary. Will change it to 'users' next time.

While this was a false alarm, I think we should keep this level of vigilance, in the future. I had no idea the warrant canary expired today.

Actually, the FAQ doesn't say anything about it being updated early morning on the 1st of the month, it says sometime during the first week of the month, so I've never expected it on the 1st. On the old site it would get posted between the 3rd and 5th of the month usually.

I think it really, really needs to be updated on the 1st. If raddit really did receive a court order to turn over info on us, we shouldn't be left in the dark for several days, wondering if it's a case of delayed update, or if it's really a court order.

But what's the difference if it's posted on the 1st or the 3rd, so long as it's once a month? Most sites only update their canary every 3 months.

Ok, but then they should say "Expires on September 3rd" in the warrant canary. The last one said "Period: August, 2017", meaning it expired on the 1st of September.

Thanks for the heads up! Hopefully we'll have an update from admins soon.

Yeah. If there's no update within a day, we should assume the worst.
