no_fun_allowed and ShiningWing have requested I delete all the CSS themes they contributed to raddle - what do I do?

Submitted by ziq admin in meta (edited )

They want me to delete all their data and all the themes they made.

In my view, the themes belong to the community as soon as they're donated, so it wouldn't be right for me to delete them without first consulting the community.

So should themes donated to a FOSS site be deleted upon request?

They've also sabotaged some of their themes to display a blank page with no text, but they can easily be rolled back.

Delete them and then make it very clear from here on out that CSS themes, once contributed, are to be considered communal property and will not be deleted without community consent.

As for license, I suggest: Public Domain.

or BSD, public domain isn't a real license in America, at least

It's very real. http://publicdomainmovies.net

I think that only applies when the copyright expires. In the US, anyone has automatic copyright as soon as they create a work.

Why are you arguing a nonsensical point with me? Public Domain is perfectly valid for an author to grant in the USA.

Intellectual property is theft.

But if it means not having to listen to them whine about, then delete it. Or preferably save them somewhere and bring them back when they've fucked off.

I agree with not_AFX_lol - delete them, but make a clear policy on CSS contributions for the future.

Delete them, it's not like someone(you) could not copy them and re add them later, they are not under some copyright, are they?

Why is it that everywhere I go people have no idea how copyright works.

Yes, they are "under a copyright". Author is an owner of their intelectual property by default and unless they say otherwise, they get to keep those rights.

i have no idea cause copyright is stupid imo. Well this should change in raddle's ToS, everything contributed here should fall under some FOSS license and not the auto-copyright madness.

So they want to retroactively change the license by which they distributed it?

While we technically have no obligation to, I think we should respect their wishes out of courtesy if they are the only one who contributed to their themes. If others contributed or have themes that derive from no_fun's themes, their permission should be sought first.

Just out of curiosity, did they say why they're leaving? They're pretty nice people, from what I remember. :o

They didn't, but it's easy to guess.

I'm kinda dense, could you spell it out for me...?

EDIT: Scratch that, I just saw the "Goodbye Raddle" thread on /f/lobby, think I get it now

Was there any documentation saying that themes would be donated to community?

If there were then do whatever you want, if there wasnt then there should be one so that this won't be a problem again. :)
