/f/torrents ?

Submitted by Mullvaden in meta (edited )

Would a forum for torrent tips be a good idea or does it open up for legal problems? The man insists that linking to pirated stuff is illegal, which is weird but how it is. Now that Onebigtorrent is dead and TPB has turned us into Monero-mining zombies (fuckers) there is certainly a need for something to fill the vacuum. Such a forum would have to be heavily moderated of course...

I don't think raddle should be turned into a filesharing forum, there are tons of other forums for that, but an f/torrents to discuss torrent sites and to ask for help finding files would be good.

been holding myself to post very sweet pirated stuff.

Probably a great way to get taken down

I don't think we should allow domain name or hosting companies to tell us what we can and can't publish here. If one of the companies that hosts raddle or its domain name order us to remove something lest we be taken down, I think we should either switch hosts, or go .onion only. I'm aware the latter would be bad for exposure, but I'd rather have a forum with 40 active users to one with more, but where I have to censor myself.

.onion only would make a higher barrier to entry for new users.

That's why I said "I'm aware the latter (.onion only) would be bad for exposure."

raddle shouldn't be an exclusive club, it needs to attract/make new radicals.

I agree. I'm aware going .onion only would be bad for exposure, but I'd rather have a forum with 40 active users to one with more, but where I have to censor myself.

Doxxing and torrenting aren't stupid shit.

2

zombie_berkman wrote

Never said anything about doxxing. I'm saying there are 501 torrent sites it's stupid to make this on

That's not what you said the first time, but okay. If you don't want to see torrents here, just don't subscribe to that particular subforum. I like /u/Jadedctrl's idea - that we submit torrents that we created, for media (or whatever it is) that isn't well known, that we think others here will be interested in. Okay, those last two parts were my idea.

Show me then.

Also by that logic if you don't want to see child porn or Nazi shit just don't sub to them.

Your first comment said:

So, your original argument was not "there are already other sites that do this," it was, "I don't want raddle to be in danger of being taken down for posting illegal content." My comment about doxxing was because that was the one time (as far as I'm aware) that the admins were told to take something down or have our DNS dropped. Someone posted the social security number of Trump's daughter (I think she was his daughter), and the DNS hosting company Raddle used at the time sent the admins a letter telling them to delete it. They did, and switched DNS companies shortly after.

Also by that logic if you don't want to see child porn or Nazi shit just don't sub to them.

That analogy doesn't work, because child porn and Nazi shit are terrible things that shouldn't exist. Torrents are fine.

I never said it wasn't, you said I made an argument against doxxing which I never did. But either way I have better things than to argue with dipshits like you

I never said you made an argument about doxxing. I mentioned it because that's the one time we were threatened by the DNS host.

1

zombie_berkman wrote

Stop fucking gaslighting. I called hosting torrents stupid shit the you Sadi DOXXING and torrents weren't stupid shit. That implies I said anything about doxxing. Then you went to say that's not what I said at first implying I actually said something about doxxing.

This is just a long chain of misunderstandings. When you said, "if we never put stupid shit on there in the first place we wont be told to take it down...," I thought you were partially referring to the doxxing incident where we were threatened by our DNS company. That's why I said doxxing wasn't stupid. Now I understand that you weren't referring to that incident, so I misunderstood you. Forget the doxxing part.

When I said, "That's not what you said the first time," I meant, "You didn't say 'Let's not put torrents on this site, because other sites already do that,' you said 'Don't host torrents here, because that will get the website taken down.'"

Possibly, that's why I bring it up here first. The domain is not easily expropriatable by the US government like .com-domains but I don't know about the hosting situation.

zombie_berkman wrote

Weren't what and oink hosted in like Africa and somewhere like the middle of the ocean and they still got shut down

2

Mullvaden wrote

We shall have to host in North Korea then ;) Just kidding, good point. By screening the links, only allowing "radical" stuff we could be less of a target for the copyright mob, but that is just my assumption.

I'd vote against it unless its to share copyleft materials. No need for another shitty fileshare site, there are too many.

For linking to torrent sites, or to specific magnet links..?

2

Mullvaden wrote

I'm thinking magnet links, most sites have annoying commercials (not Onebigtorrent though, but r.i.p.) that leaves me in constant fear for malware.

2

ziq wrote (edited )

It could get messy if the whole front page of raddle gets flooded with links to specific torrents tho.

3

jadedctrl wrote

How about just sharing torrents you create? Just to get the word out that it exists, you know?

2

sudo wrote

Maybe if it's something that isn't already well-known.

3

Mullvaden wrote

True, I'm thinking more about torrents that apply to the subject of Raddle, documentaries/books about social issues, the environment etc. Not necessarily the latest Hollywood blockbusters and games, that would eat the bandwidth pretty quick.

1

ziq wrote

wait, you want the files to be hosted on raddle's server?

4

Mullvaden wrote

No, no, just magnet links. But simple page clicks by thousands and thousands of people looking for free shit around the world consumes bandwidth too :)
