Trying to get into the habit of reading again in order to make a dent in this list of anarchist writings that I have piled up, starting with w/decolonial. I just finished Discourse on Colonialism which I thought was really fucking good.

My family might be visiting this weekend, which is nice; my little brother's sugar glider died in his arms last Sunday, so I'm hoping I can comfort him in person instead of on the phone.

It is!

I've been re-reading Fanon's Wretched of The Earth this week. It is brilliant for anybody living in an African postcolony. His descriptions of the typologies of post-independence movements (around Afrophobic xenophobia, around the emergence of a national bourgeoisie, succession battles, around the stagnation of the liberation party and its gradual transformation into an intelligence agency) are still uncannily accurate today.

I'd possibly think it was the best political thing I'd ever read if it wasn't for the dialectical materialism and the desire to have a party involved at all, even if that party is supposed to be directly emergent from the conscientised people as a whole ("The party must be the direct expression of the masses."). As if that'd ever fucking happen.

Though he does occasionally say anarchistic stuff like

In order to arrive at this notion of party we must first and foremost rid ourselves of the very Western, very bourgeois, and hence very disparaging, idea that the masses are incapable of governing themselves. Experience has proven in fact that the masses fully understand the most complex issues.

It is as Cesaire said: "To invent the souls of men." To politicize the masses is not and cannot be to make a political speech. It means driving home to the masses that everything depends on them, that if we stagnate the fault is theirs, and that if we progress, they too are responsible, that there is no demiurge, no illustrious man taking responsibility for everything, but that the demiurge is the people and the magic lies in their hands and their hands alone. In order to achieve such things, in order to actually embody them, we must, as we have already mentioned, decentralize to the utmost.

Unfortunately statements like these are followed invariably with marxy junk.

There's a Halloween competition at work with a $100 price, I'm needy enough to participate. Management had the idea to make it 80's theme, most people wasn't born in the 80's, a good part wasn't even born in the 90's. But money is money.

I'm thinking on a The Thing (the monster) inspired costume, but I'm sure a zombie MJ from a friend of the judges is going to win.

Only 1 I'm sure lived through the 80's, the others I doubt were sentient or lived the fads that survived into the 90's.

Your comment help me revaluate my costume, The Thing is too niche for people to know about it, I'll go with robocop. It's more recognizable and keeps the horror theme.

Two midterm tests today. One down one to go. First one went much better than I expected.

Started learning Spanish over the last two weeks, having a lot of fun with it.

Because they can only be enjoyed with a good vocabulary and a bit of mastery of the language.

An insight into the randoms stuff in my brain: On the zones on indiscernibility between plants and animals

  1. Plants photosynthesise, animals don’t

False! Some plants don’t photosynthesise, and some animals do

1 b. Plants are autotrophic (make their own food), animals are heterotrophic (get food from elsewhere)

False, some plants eat! From the overtly carnivorous ones, to parasitic herbivorous ones like Myco-heterotrophs

And yeah, some animals photosynthesise.

1 c. Plant respiration is the inverse of animal respiration, one taking in CO2 and releasing O2, the other the opposite way around

Obviously not the case for those animals that photosynthesise

  1. Plants are not mobile, animals are mobile

False! Many animals like sea sponges and barnacles do not move, and many plants do move in meaningful senses

Plants can communicate with each other too, both chemically and with sounds.

With Autumn here, I have been starting to try to to identify and collect wild roots to use over the winter, but I am always afraid to try them. As far as I know, there are no hemlocks in the area, but it still scares me.

For the last week and a half I thought I was starting to have more serious mental health issues again and then yesterday I realized it was because I quit kratom two weeks ago and it had been working great for anti-depression & anti-anxiety for a year. Weird experience - I didn't realize that was what the issue was. I had just given it up on a whim cause I ran out and was quitting alcohol, but I guess I'll be sticking with it for now.

We used to have less processing power on our server or something so I could actually look at this page because it used to take too much to do the math of our posts.
