I think it's a symptom of the broader collapse of faith in mainstream institutions. Most Americans (and probably most people in the world) have been living under recession like conditions for the past several decades thanks to neoliberalism. After so many decades of class warfare the people are bound to lose faith in whoever and whatever has been said to be running the show. The real struggle now is for the left to win this information war by speaking concretely about people's physical needs.

We also need to better articulate and promote actual alternatives. The right is making a lot of hay right now by associating the left with wealthy Clintonian democrats.

Indeed. In other words function like an actual political organization by speaking to people's concrete needs and putting forward a new and better vision of society. Imagine that.

"we" who?

The establishment media outlets shouldn't be trusted, and shouldn't be let off the hook. Remember that conspiracy theory that Saddam Hussein was behind 9/11 and that Iraq had WMDs? It wasn't Alex Jones or David Ike who were promoting that one. And unlike this crisis actor BS, that conspiracy had devastating consequences for the US.
