So looking on the site I notice that a lot of complaints seem to revolve around the site not being large enough and viable as a platform. I feel this is likely because of the strict bans on opinions that fall out of line here.

So it might be worth looking into making a fork of this site still focused on leftism, but not as strict with bans. A sort of "debate raddle".

This is probably going to be controversial but in terms of long term viability if we do want growth (if we don't that may be fine too, small can be nice) this seems worth looking into.

I don't think abandoning the goal of the website in the name of growth is the best option. Sure dissenting opinions and non-politics can be welcome here, but the focus of the website should remain on radical politics, even if that hurts growth.

If you look at the moderation log for most forums, it's only obscene and harmful comments being deleted

Right. They're not banning dissent, they're banning trolls. Trolls by definition don't add anything useful to the discussion. I could pop into a Raddle conversation and state a hateful view, but as long as I use clean language I'll get a lot of insults in response but no ban.

And as amongstclouds points out below, the source code is open.

mmm idk about that. Dissenting opinions sure, hateful though, even if in proper PC language, could still be ban-able I feel but it would depend on context for sure

There aren't strict bans on out-of-line opinions-- other than, y'know, plain-out bigotry and reprehensible stuff. Though if you go into /f/communism and espouse liberalism, you're going to get a forum ban. I feel like that's kind of implied, why would you even try going there, lol.
