The reason is obvious. World is going to shit > people drink more to forget it > they have more hangovers > colors hurt when having hangover > people are ordering gray carpets.

When you say that colorful stuff hurt the eyes, I thought about how we spend so much time with bright screens with lots of shining colors. Maybe it's natural to want a gray world to rest them eyes

I've seen a few theories about this but the one that resonates with me on the home interiors: people are constantly thinking about resale value and staging of their homes. Homes have become so expensive they are an investment and you don't want to screw with your investment. I have a friend on facebook who is in her fifties and has said she finally is in the house she will retire in so she is decorating how she wants. She's spent her whole life in houses she didn't like because she thought of the resale value before she thought of herself.

This reminds me: I still need to paint the walls in my bedroom. They're beige and I hate it. I'm thinking a hunter green would be more fun. :D

When you consider that new home buyers (because of a lack of time and money) tend to want turn-key houses now, rather than a house they can redo themselves to reflect their tastes it's an effective strategy to stage the home to appeal to as many people as possible. I too need to get some paint on my walls.

Yeah, true. A big part of what sold us on this house is how much real color there was. The kitchen and dining room are yellow, there's wood panelling in the converted garage and one of the bedrooms has lovely wallpapering and paint. We just need to colorize the other rooms, too. :)

The downside, though, is we've definitely bought a house that is FULL of boomer DIY projects. The clothes washer that was added just has a hose going to a large sink for its drainage and the sink fills up so we have to do small loads. The garbage disposal was home-done and they made a double-trap which traps really smelly gasses in the kitchen sink (that one is no fun!). I swear half the house is held together by these tiny ass nails that keep falling out.
