I used this when I played cod bc I thought hopefully that other players wouldn't be mean to someone whose user name was this friendly. I was wrong but I like it anyway.

I can guess the story behind fortifiedmischief and NOISEBOB, but maybe there's some stories lurking where I wouldn't expect them.

"subrosa" is one of many flowery usernames I have used, I'm daisy on reddit, some rosy figure on raddle. I think I picked it up when I got into BMX culture, there's a brand with the same name. I liked the etymology, that story of romans sharing secrets "under the rose".

flowery usernames?

hmm

this thread is where we learn that subrosa is flower bomb

what's the story behind fortifiedmischief????

6

subrosa OP wrote

tbh I didn't get a whole lot further than: You're a fortress of mischief. Seemed self-explanatory :P

It's based on Wu Zi Mu (or "Woozie"), the blind triad boss from GTA: SA, who was my favorite side character when I played it as a kid. But for the sake of adding another layer of obscurity I replaced "woo" with a frencher-sounding "veu".

honestly thank goodness for this thread, if only so i can pronounce usernames correctly in my head

__0... Super short username, also the kind of thing that would never be available on a larger site. It's pretty low-key as well.

I like puns and wordplay.

My first two handles were more of a placeholder than anything.

subrosa OP wrote

what were your first two handles, if you wanna share? maybe I remember

SomeIconoclast & Chaosbomb

My alt was MarxWasTheMessiah, but tankies are a very shallow pool for fresh parody material, so I don't use it anymore.

subrosa OP wrote (edited )

Ha! I remember the Iconoclast. (and Chaosbomb too, I think)

i don’t think about usernames too hard because i don’t think about becoming attached to a place when i join. so usually it’s just some random words i’ll throw into the username box at the time of registration based on what’s around me at the time, thinking that it will be temporary and i’ll probably not log back in or use it again.

fwiw I'm enjoying it, doesn't prompt me to switch to better songs

Beck vibes, sort of

kind of 'background story' I was hoping for

I was listening to sailor moon ost and my current trend with usernames/passwords is the same word in two languages.

Garrias wrote

"Garrias" comes from a deformation of "Garry", as in Garry's Mod. Me and a couple of friends made up a character with that name, I later created an email account using it, and it stuck. I eventually used it for Reddit, which is why I reused it here.

Potkea wrote

I needed a pen name. I decided to find one by switching around letters in the names of U.S. cities.

I scrambled “Topeka” into “Potkea” and that’s how I got the name.

Fool wrote

Because fool is short to type.

Ikeepforgetting was really long. Name explains itself.

Peachsorbet wasn't short enough. Freeze Peach.

I forget the other names I used on Raddle.

Well I just got here and I like Hazey IPA so it was the first thing that came to mind

Quicksilver wrote

I tend to cycle through online usernames overtime, and quicksilver happened to be the primary username I was using across the webz.

Why quicksilver? At the time I was into Anglish (and alt-English language experiment seeing how English may have developed without non germanic influence, or, in other words, if the Norman invasion failed), and I was looking at an Anglish translation of the periodic table, and found quicksilver to be for Mercury. I quite like how it sounded, like the etymology behind it (the old meaning of quick meaning living: living-silver), so I began taking it as my handle.

5

subrosa OP wrote

Yeah, still is Quecksilber in German. I assumed quicksilver to be as common, as English, as mercury. Gotta take a look at Anglish, see what them nerds are up to.

4

Quicksilver wrote

Quicksilver would be used to give a more poetic or more archaic spin to what you're saying or writing. It common parlance you wouldn't generally hear quicksilver used.

It's a really cool concept I think, and the community seems generally alright, and is quite varied in their interpretations of Anglish.
