On Friday, February 9, the Court of Appeals of Concepción has annulled the sentence that sentenced four young Mapuche community members to 15 years in prison in a flawed trial that had no evidence. The prisoners are: Ernesto LLaitul, Esteban Henríquez, Ricarlo Delgado Reinao and Nicolás Alcaman. The annulment responds to the appeal filed by the defense of the community members and was answered unanimously in the Sixth Chamber of the Court.
]]>Though I can only enjoy a part of this. One of the highlights of the holiday is just talking with your family and discussing what you've been up to. Sadly most of the time I struggle to keep up the conversation or even simply don't understand what people say because I do not speak my ethnic language.
The realization that you are not able to talk to your own family hits hard. I understand that it's not my fault, but I can't help but feel ashamed of it.
I try my best to learn the language and speak it, but in the end it's just easier for everyone to use Russian and you switch to it without noticing. There are so little practical reasons for you to speak ethnic tongue it hurts. People from Western parts of the country would often ask what's the point of returning to your roots when you have everything for a comfortable life. I can't quite verbalize the answer for this and I guess it's hard to understand for someone who's a part of a dominant culture.
It just feels like loss of something ephemeral and close to you, and extreme shame in front of your ancestors, although nobody ever blaimed me.
But I'm happy I'm not the only one who feels that way, and a lot of young people now are trying to reclaim themselves by changing their name, learning the language, making DIY traditional clothes, making art, folk hip-hop music, Buryat bichig graffitis on the streets, tattoos, caring about land and lots of other fun stuff.
I just hope I will live until the moment when neither the fear of loss nor the shame of it will stop me from enjoying New Year and other traditional holidays.
