Tor Hidden Service URLs (aka .onion URLs) are generated randomly. However, some people may want to customize their .onion addresses, usually by making the first few letters of the URL spell out the name of their website. This is called a 'vanity' address, and there are a few tools that will generate one for you. These programs will generate thousands of .onion addresses every second, until they find one that matches the pattern your requested. Be warned: if you choose a pattern that has more than just a few letters in it, it could take anywhere from weeks to millennia to generate a URL, depending on how long you want it to be. 9 characters is about the upper limit for anyone with an average computer, as that will take about a month to generate.

If you want to create a custom v2 .onion address (the old kind), use eschalot.

If you want to create a custom v3 .onion address (the new kind), use mkp224o.

If you want to create a custom v2 .onion address, and you have a graphics card that you want to utilize to speed up the process, and you don't mind using Mono to run it, use scallion.
