Just a little note:

ProtonMail is open source, but this is only the front-end (the code our computers receive and process). The back-end (their infrastructure) is not. But it's already a good thing that they released the code partially.

I'm afraid I only tried ProtonMail. They have stricter rules, such as if you lose your 2 step authentication device and backup codes, there is no "forgot my password" and your account is virtually inaccessible. No way to recover, so you have to remember your credentials.

9 months late to the party, but self hosting is the only way to go if you value privacy. If your information is on another server, it's not private
