I think the biggest problem here is the "opt-out" model here, especially for people who might not know about it. CLIQZ as an organization makes free software, mostly with the goal of subverting google services. It makes sense that Mozilla would support them. What's not cool is forcing people into it. Download the add on yourself if you want to use it, it shouldn't be the default.

It's only the default for 1% of new installs in Germany. And yes, I agree that they messed up with this, but we shouldn't definitely not spin up this into "Do not use Firefox, let's go to Chromium/Opera/... because they all have data collection". Firefox is really the only hope for an anti-Chromium monopoly.

I'm not switching, I just disable data collection. It's not a huge deal, but it is a dick move.

Wish these fucking corporations would just straight-up say 'we're selling you out to make money' instead of throwing bullshit slogans like 'benefit for users' around.

Mozilla isn't a corporation, it's a non-profit.

The Mozilla Corporation was established in August 2005 as a wholly owned taxable subsidiary that serves the non-profit, public benefit goals of its parent, the Mozilla Foundation, and the vast Mozilla community.

First EME, then abruptly switching to WebExtensions

Why do you think switching to WebExtensions only and with better API support such a bad thing? Yeah, developers will need to port their extensions, but it with WebExtensions Firefox can finally have better performance.

WebExtensions are not necessarily a bad thing, it's just that instead of phasing the old extensions out gradually, Mozilla decided to announce that within a relatively short while the extensions would be dropped completely.

Are you kidding? That's exactly what they did: They announced the deprecation of XUL/XPCOM more than 2 years ago: https://blog.mozilla.org/addons/2015/08/21/the-future-of-developing-firefox-add-ons/

I like WebExtensions, but I'm not an extension developer, so my opinion probably doesn't count.

I still hate their new search bar and use an extension to restore the old one.

I thought in the options you can decide whether to have the URL box + Search box or URL+Search box (in FF57+)?

dont forget that google is the major mozilla donator just so they can be the default search engine.

you can always use shortcuts for the url bar, i.e i use 'w' for wikipedia and 'y' for youtube. and you can pretty much add any search form to your search engines with right click.
