I just joined. It's not as busy as it's very new, and it's made to create networks of friends, but if you join a pub you can find more randos.

Did you ever heard of Freifunk? It is a great grassroots-community consisting of great people with visionary ideas. The majority of their resources, including their wiki and mailing-list is indeed very motivating and inspiring, but unfortunately almost only available in german.
Maybe I can route some of the activists over here, to talk about your idea in this post or you try to get in touch with them via IRC, Mumble, mailing-lists. Probably the best way is by posting on mastodon, diaspora or elsewhere with the hashtag #freifunk - I am pretty sure you get an answer and a public conversation about this may result in a solid base for working on this idea in english and inclusively (not just for the ones subscribed to the lists, the ones online in the chat while you asked etc.)

Well, the forum is more for distributed usage of the existing internet and not making our own internet, but same basic idea.

I'd be interested to learn more about this. DIY internet seems ideal. Nice post!
Edit: Oh, there's a whole forum for this! I need to keep up.

We recently upgraded the infrastructure, and now need to work through a backlog of signup requests. You should hear back soon.

Using old phones would probably be more feasible.

That is better. But shit content will get much more views / credits than the type of stuff we would produce, so we'd still be at a disadvantage.

shrugs
Look at /u/ziq's post up there-- they might, judging by how they deal with vanity naming.

Fuck, that's a terrible design flaw.
Honestly, though, I get where they're coming from. Dealing with vanity naming on a decentralized network is hard to figure out. But why on Earth did they pick an auctioning system? Wouldn't, perhaps, an expiration system work so much better...? Either you don't upload anything for a year or a "rent" runs out of time...
I'd consider the requirement of investing LBRY credits (or money) in order to upload anything a design flaw, too. Not all content creators have money to fling around...
But it's the best network like this we have, at least for now.
EDIT: Alright, it looks like in the future anyone will be able to earn credits by hosting content, kind of like Filecoin, etc. That's better...

If it's modeled on bitcoin, does that mean it has essentially ancap values?

I'm very excited about this, but this has me worried:

I have heard good things about dat. I ran an i2p node for a while, it seems like a decent platform. Freenet is also good, but seems to have a smaller userbase. I actively use mastodon for social media and it works phenomenally.
