Collectivizing agriculture is needed

yeah, but taking self-sustaining resources from a low-yield commune isn't.

there's so many things that went wrong under Stalin's collectivization campaigns granted these were rookie mistakes, but the fact that it was copied by Mao should show you how bad it gets

Firstly, Stalin, Collectivized through the state rather than acknowledging, preserving, and protecting the rights of the voluntary collectivizations of the Obshchina (and certain Anarchist Ukrainians) adding their inputs into the 5 year plans, instead he went ahead with his own solutions or that of the Party which already had a nasty reputation for expropriations.

Secondly, he took from the Obshchina and the well off members, the Kulaks, their low-yield grain production. The Kulaks are the very representation of the phrase: "equal opportunity, unequal success" they took from them simply because they had more in store, hell even those who didn't have "more" in store were expropriated.

Lastly, This process of Expropriation from low-yield self-sufficient communal farms on all farmers, inevitably created famine on all sectors of society.

There was no question that in the First two years of Stalin's regime a massive decline in population did occur stemming from a caustic mix of War Communism, the Expropriations, Collectivization campaigns, & even the 5 year plans granted Stalin did learn from his mistakes, by moving a lot of the workers to the cities and lessening the amount of farmers through industrialization he did allow the farm to remain high-yield although relatively self-sufficient.

BUT, EVEN AFTER ALL THAT, Mao (and Pol Pot) had to copy the older model for Anti-Revisionist reasons. This idealism makes him more detached from the people than he is supposed to be.

Stalin can excuse himself doing a rookie mistake granted it culled the population, but Mao literally copied off of Stalin's MISTAKES
