i'm going to disagree. bitcoin can't raise global temperatures if fossil plants are made to not operate, either by legislation or direct action. that the power produced is used for pointless purposes is secondary to how that power is produced. consumption is ultimately a beauty contest

Agreed. Besides, if they want to blame someone or something for the global temperature rising, they should blame the manufacturing companies burning fossil fuels. Bitcoin mining has only existed for 10 years, the others contributed far greater when it comes to air pollution. Why put the blame on bitcoin mining?

pretty much. I've been reading lowtechmagazine lately, and while they might not have the best answers for everything (dredging the netherlands by hand? seriously?), they are definitely right in that we need to rethink what expectations we have for power. we're extremely spoiled in expecting unlimited amounts of electricity to always be available, all times of the day all year long

Well, I agree that it wouldn't hurt if bitcoin miners find an alternative way to mine bitcoins that is more environmentally friendly, but I doubt bitcoin mining contributed half of the reason for global warming. Between bitcoin mining and burning fossil fuels, bitcoin mining will always be the lesser of two evils.

Ancaps love technocracy and neoliberalism (observe the trend towards neofeudalism); it plays into the entire artificial scarcity and artificial complexity mentality conditioned from birth by a dominator culture of ontogenetic cripples...
