I wouldn't go so far as to say it was specifically about debt. But he was challenging the authority of Rome and their vassals (special attention given to the rulers of the temple). That challenge absolutely had an economic quality as we saw specifically in the turning of the tables. But Jews at the time understood the Messiah as being a political leader that would free them from Rome (even though he was telling them this isn't how he was functioning). He was building a following. He was likely killed to protect from an insurrection.
