It's also anarchist. MLs make up the largest single tendency on the team, but the majority of the regular people who use the site (not the mods/admins) are much more anarchist leaning. If you want to see more anarchist things posted there, then come make anarchist posts instead of complaining that it's not anarchist enough (which is a very sectarian thing to say to be truthful).
Full disclosure: I've been working on the Lemmy Rust server for chapo.chat for the past month.
There was a good chance of us ending up here on Raddle at one point instead of trying to establish our own platform, but a few things rubbed us the wrong way. First of all, we've seen many communities leave Reddit only to turn into isolated, insular forums on a downward spiral. Everyone still using this site will know what I'm talking about.
We were looking for a platform which supports federation, and while Lemmy isn't there yet, it is the closest thing to achieving that goal and the the upstream developers are working full steam on making it a reality. Meanwhile, the staff of Raddle has been talking shit about the lemmy project, describing it as a "year long temper tantrum." They have a personal grudge against the author because he's an ML, but when you set all that sectarian bullshit aside and look at the work he's doing, it is a vital project for democratizing the Internet and has the potential to do for Reddit what Mastodon did for Twitter.
Finally, if we had thrown caution to the wind and set up chapo on Raddle, there was a strong likelihood that we wouldn't even be allowed to moderate our own community due to the Raddle anarchists being so anti-tankie. This only further highlighted the importance of federated social media to us. Chapo shouldn't be controlled by any one ideology, it has always been a left-unity community.
We decided what was best for maintaining our own autonomy, as well as for the health of a decentralized internet, and the integrity of our revolutionary beliefs was putting our work into Lemmy, which we are convinced has a much stronger future than the alternative because of the controversial people and politics behind the alternative. In the past month we've made over 800 changes to Lemmy, added a reporting feature, user tags, community settings, fixed some security issues, and completely overhauled the user interface.
If you've got issues with the community because of the chaser/pedophile/transphobia drama the wreckers keep bringing up, that's fine. I'm not going to argue that we're perfect - but just understand where we're coming from here. The whole point of the work we're doing is to enable people to chose which communities they want to identify with. The code is AGPL licensed and anybody can take it and set up their own instance, even you anarchists. In fact, we're even expecting this to happen as soon as federation becomes stable - but unlike the other Reddit alternative, this won't isolate people from the communities they enjoy. The anarchists will still be able to join in the discussions with us even though we'd have different home servers. This is the ideal application of the left unity chapo has always strived for. We will be able to keep the imperialist / sectarian stuff off of the main server but the anarchist servers will be able to engage in that kind of talk as long as it doesn't spread to chapo.chat.
So I invite you all to make accounts on the new home for chapos and leave your preconceptions at the door.

Your site doesn't work under Tor. Fix it and maybe I'll come to make fun of you from time to time.
You won't.
