Economists generaly don't worry about the national debt. Especially as long as it remains proportional to GDP. Keynesian policies would also have you spend the most during recession which is what is happening now.
Budget Hawks on the other hand are just politicians working to uphold our economic hierarchy by attacking public welfare programs. Of course their attacks are almost always in bad faith. They happily vote to give money to corporations and the ultra wealthy whenever they can get away with it.
