No definitely not lol. The only thing i did to prepare was reading The Illiad and The Odyssey, (which i had been wanting to read anyway) but that really didnt add to my enjoyment.

The best way to read it, I think, is to let the words pour over you and paint their pictures. He has such an amazing grasp of language that even the made up words make perfect sense.

I've been able to turn that overly-analytical part of myself off for lots of other texts and just enjoy the prose, only retroactively deeply analyzing, but for some reason with Ulysses I'm so fascinated by the incredible depth of Joyce's language that I want to understand it as well as I can -- I think it really is just a matter of deprogramming myself from that over-analysis, at least for my fist reading... It's just total analysis-paralysis. I've just got to learn to let myself have fun with it, I guess.
