I just grabbed one off the shelf, put it in a cart, pretended I was about to check out, and then ran out the front door with the drill in my arms laughing like a lunatic once I got close. They're hands off, so they won't stop you. Obviously, I didn't go back for a while.

Here's a tip most people don't know about "The Depot": If the power tools are locked up in a cage & you have to get an employee to open it, nine times out of ten, the combo is that stores number. Example: lets say you're at store# 141 (one-four-one is the combo). If you come across a location with a 2 digit store #, use zero as your first number. Example: store # 32 = zero-three-two.

Go in and grab one from the shelf, then go to the customer service/returns counter and tell them you wish to return it but you lost the receipt and you paid with cash (or some variation of this concept that works for you i.e. fumble for the receipt in wallet before "realizing" that you forgot it and then asking them if they can try to look it up on a dummy credit or debit card that isn't actually attached to you; just don't take too much time but enough to not seem sketch), and then when they're unable to find the purchase, tell them "ok thanks I'll come back," and then walk out the door!
