fta: "As part of a settlement, the secretary of state has amended all of the voter registration forms to allow voters to avoid swearing a religious oath. The new “mail in” form provides a check box that says, “OPTIONAL: Because of a sincerely held belief, I decline to include the final four words of the oath above.”

Is that really good enough? Atheism is not a belief; it is a rejection of the assertion of existence of a god.

And even if we interpret "belief" as the belief that state and church should be entirely separate, it still is not just a "belief" but a guarantee under the US Constitution, so the god-related language should just be removed. Leave a little bit of space for religious extremists to write it in themselves, if they feel their own word is not good enough and they need to bring their god into it.
