Wealthy people usually don't work at all.

And if wealthy children do work, their parents don't make them do it for free; they use their connections to get them to work for more than what they'd get under a college internship.

Yeah, there's definitely a category of college students/recent graduates who are not wealthy enough to not work in the long run, but who can still comfortably forego pay for a while if it'll benefit their career. Mainly the kids of doctors, engineers, or other well-paid professionals, supported by a combination of a good parental "college fund" and scholarships (since parents' wealth is one of the strongest predictors of the sort of academic success that translates into scholarships). I fell into that category (not that I ever took an unpaid internship).
