But I'm not sure where you're going with this.

For example, I'd say the same thing for white people. It doesn't make sense to identify with whiteness, but it does make sense to acknowledge that positionality in various contexts. Outwardly that might look like a person saying "I am white" - i.e. 'I hold a specific racial position in a matrix of oppressions', and not 'I belong to a normative group that I have some kind of kin affinity with.'

For me there's more of an interesting question about whether the word 'settler' is too passive, and 'coloniser' is more appropriate.
