I commend your choice in wording since it didn't really work. If anything, the combination of displacement and reliance on community among the newly freed Black populace incentivized the creation of several subcultures across the world.
The Gullah culture that my paternal grandmother's relatives are a part of is very distinct from the Black New Yorkers that I knew growing up.
And that's just in the US; I imagine the Afro-Brazilians that supported Bolsonaro and Sankarists have different views on...everything, really.
