As a cis person, I have had no idea what to say to be supportive when I was told by someone that they were trans. I basically have just said, "oh, ok, cool. thanks for sharing." which feels very unsupportive, like I said nothing. I guess it's better than saying one of these things but it feels like I've been blase about something that is a large part of someone's life.

That's actually a good response, I'd say. When I let people know I'm non-binary and trans my biggest worry is that they'll go off on a rant about "transtrenders", so it's nice for someone to not make a big deal out of it. I imagine it's similar for binary trans people, too.
