Thanks Mycelia and Fauvenoir for suggesting this one, write-up by Fauvenoir -
I find it to be a deep, sharp critique of our modern industrial and materialistic civilization, where it is presenting nature metaphorically as this alien Otherness which human reason can hardly comprehend. It is actually a brilliantly-made low-budget scifi movie about a mysterious “forbidden zone” that was changed by an unknown (and unseen) alien presence in a conceptually similar way to Lovecraft’s The Color Out of Space, but with a philosophical approach (that some are attributing to Spinoza). As with other Tarkovsky films, it is post-expressionistic splendor crossed over with a level of surrealism, so it makes you travel both visually and intellectually. I feel there’s always something disturbing happening in what you’re not seeing within the movie.
