As the first film in our green-anarchy month spectacular, Princess Mononoke was the obvious choice.
Although the tale of a forest and it’s members fighting back against the encroachment of a greedy destructive society isn’t an original tale, the film industry has practically made a genre of this story, Princess Mononoke is different. Part of what differentiates it is it’s direct presentation of violence not as something to be denied or overcome but that simply is. As well, characters motivations can’t easily be placed on a good/evil gradient (in comparison to say, Avatar), but instead their desires and alignment are directly related to their relationship to the land.
