This is why I really like the Freedombox project. They are tiny single board computers from Olimex that run several services to replace cloud storage. It comes with a Tor hidden service preconfigured so the user does not need to know much about Tor.
They use very little power and have a battery backup built in. Since they run a version 3 hidden service it is unlikely that anyone will find the link to your personal cloud unless you share it. It does not require forwarding ports to do this. It would be amazing to see the cloud replaced with these but is unlikely to happen soon.
