I only buy second hand laptops and phones to try not to destroy the environment so much. But also it's way cheaper, you can get a good second hand laptop for $200 that more or less equivalent to one that costs $600 new. Models that are popular with businesses are good, like thinkpads. businesses upgrade every few years and the old ones end up in the second hand market in great condition

I only buy used myself. Linux Mint Cinnamon or Windows 10 LTSC 2019 is great for those with limited tech experience looking to clean install a new used laptop.

I just recently took the plunge for under $500 (almost $2k retail) and upgraded my 10 year old Dell Latitude E6410 laptop to an HP EliteBook 840 G5 Ultrabook - i7-8550U (8th gen), Sure View Gorilla Glass Touch Screen (700nits/120Hz), 16GB DDR4 (upgradable to 32GB), 1TB NVME SSD, Backlit & Spill resistant Keyboard, Ultra-slim Silver Aluminum Unibody Construction, Backlit & Spill resistant Keyboard, 3 Year Onsite Next Business Day Warranty.

Refurbished ones have always been amazing for me - often less than half the price for the same performance, if not better performance than more expensive new ones.

Some suggestions would be nice. 13" to 14" ultrabooks under $200 for example.

FTA:

I run Linux from USB sticks

Same for me with the 128GB USB 3.1 Sandisk Ultrafits

Note: Ultrafit no fast enough to efficiently run Windows/apps, also W2G discontinued
