seems just as powerful for surveillance as having a smartphone with you, though a bit more on the nose. i guess the "on the nose" part may further desensitize people or perhaps bring them around?

I think it's even more powerful than a smartphone, since for a smartphone battery-life is far more important and so people are more likely to notice if you upload everything the mic picks up.
