It's not about diverging from the UNIX kernel, it's about incompetence.
This is just amazing! No default fucking password! Jajaja!
I don't get the point of million-dollar-funded operating systems if things like this are actual problems.

I laughed my ass off when I heard about this. i'm fucking floored that nobody would check this. Shouldn't there be a unit test somewhere to make sure you can't just root blindly?

well they are apple users...

It's not Apple users, it's Apple developers. I'd expect something like this from Microsoft, but Apple's dev teams always struck me as good. Most of of the problems with macOS aren't technical, they're managerial. The kernel at least is normally very solid.

In some ways yeah I'm sure they're good developers. But at the same time as a lowly PHP developer I've had issues where Apple decided "let's stick three different versions of PHP in the default installation of OS X and make it impossible to determine which one is actually running!" This is before trying to understand the mystery of why the fuck you would install a server-side web language in an OS.

I used brew to install PHP 7 but ran into a problem where it would only handle PHP 5. I looked for where it was installed and found three different locations (these weren't aliases). I spent two hours playing whack-a-mole trying to figure out which one was being run before I gave up trying to develop in OS X.

to be fair the Windows kernel is also very good but there's just so much shit heaped on it in userspace that you don't get to see it normally.

I think that it is important to also keep in mind that this is the most profitable company in the entire world. I should hope there dev team is decent.

Do Mac users know what "root" means, when it's not part of a plant?

It's a joke people. Most computer users don't know what root means, in computing.

Not really. People do know what it means as soon as the equivalent Windows Administrator account is mentioned.
