Hooktube: Share YouTube videos without giving them views. Bypass country blocks and age restrictions. Download YouTube videos and music. Get a light-weight page instead of YT's bloated scripts. Just replace the domain in any YT link with hooktube.com. (Also comments aren't present by default :P) hooktube.com

Just replace the domain in any YT link with hooktube.com and you get a light-weight page that loads YouTube's media files (mp4, webm, etc) directly into your browser's native media player. Very useful in my experience for bypassing country blocks and getting a light-weight and non-resource-hungry browsing experience on mobile!

It's a seemingly good service. It's just a shame that it's run by a reactionary. (The footer links to imgoat, favorite image hosting service of right-wing trash dump Voat, TempleOS, /pol/'s favorite meme operating system, and used to complain about "alt-left" censorship although it seems that's been removed.)

Edit: Here's an archived page showing the older, more reactionary footer: https://web.archive.org/web/20170910185156/https://hooktube.com/watch?v=PBCNWmU5apE

From the archived page:

Friends

CensoredList.com - People/videos put into youtube's new quarantine mode for videos that don't break ToS but that are disliked by the alt-left. Not yet very extensive but he's working on it.

imgoat.com - Ez pz to remember replacement for imgur, an alt-left company that censors images it disagrees with politically.

Apparently the "alt-left" (whatever that means) controls the Internet and leftists never get censored. I wonder why we're all here then?

Meanwhile it also seemingly used to be a porn site: https://web.archive.org/web/*/https://hooktube.com/*

You can even see links advertising videos of 11 year old girls, 15 year old girls, etc. (Of course I'm sure it was just fake keyword spam like on most porn sites.) Hopefully that has nothing to do with the current owner.

It should also be noted that concerns have floated around various circles that Hooktube is a "data mining" operation, but there's no way to say how true that is.

I made a really lightweight one a while ago (replace youtube.com with sfyt.ca, example) so I could watch stuff on youtube without spoilers (no related vids, seekbar, comments, etc.). Does anyone know how they bypass country blocks, and age restrictions?

Do you have the source code?

Link

When you open the index page, you just add "?v=zoFJFDl5s1Q" to the end of the link, where you put your youtube video id. When I had it set up on sfyt.ca, I would just change youtube.com?v=videoid to sfyt.ca?v=videoid.

It's really bare bones though and is really only useful if you need to avoid seekbars & related videos for some reason.

Could you consider licensing it? I think I might try to build something from this.

Oh just take it, it's easy enough to replicate. It would've just sat on my harddrive otherwise. The video part is really just the sfyt.js and a few lines in index.html, the rest is just some bootstrap formatting.

It doesn't-- as far as I can tell, the JS just embeds the video in your browser.
The "best" real way I can think of doing is someone hosting a server in an unblocked country, maybe using VPN(s) or different servers for different sorts of blockage, fetch the video on the server/stream it from YT to webserver to client... It's really stupid and roundabout, and would be no negligable burden for the server-host, but it'd work.
