Strictly speaking, I usually use gVim ("Graphical Vim") which includes the ability to select text with the mouse, and a standard set of toolbars & menus so you don't need to remember everything right from the start. I rarely use any of those buttons anymore, but it's a good option for getting into it.

Also, remapping jj to <esc> in insert mode (i.e. 'inoremap jj <esc>' in your vimrc) makes vim much more usable. Before I learned you could do this, I found constantly switching in and out of insert mode very inconvenient.
