Zoom deserves its own forum at this stage

The most impressive thing is how well they have handled the load, any other service would have blackout 10 times over by now. I'd believe it from Microsoft, Amazon, Google but a previously unknown company? I wouldn't be at all surprised that it's sudden popularity is partly a honeypot operation.

It's subsidized and monitored in real time by United States...Department of Homeland Security.

The company advertises this fact as a feature... To get more government contracts from USA & canada

It is screaming the words honey pot, amazing that so many organizations are so technically gullible that they were able to scoop so much data. US anarchists should be pretty concerned about what this will mean for them

yeah i honestly wouldnt be surprised if the privacy policy for paying zoom customers is much more private than the free tier. thats the case with google for example

beyond privacy, there are so many security holes in their products that I wouldn't trust any of them to be private regardless of tier

Not that I in any way doubt it but what's your source on that?

Zoom is my source. They advertise this info and it's been reported by various tech news periodicals.

https://convergentav.net/2018/07/10/zoom-achieves-fedramp-in-process-milestone/

Zoom claims that its software is compliant with FedRAMP,[57] HIPAA,[58] PIPEDA and PHIPA,[59] and the GDPR. While its software has been audited for compliance with some of these privacy and security standards, most of Zoom's applications are closed source proprietary software and cannot be verified by independent researchers.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FedRAMP

The Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) is a US government-wide program that provides a standardized approach to security assessment, authorization, and continuous monitoring for cloud products and services.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS): Manages the FedRAMP continuous monitoring strategy including data feed criteria, reporting structure, threat notification coordination, and incident response.

theyre a huge company, even before this i think a lot of businesses used them. my schools IT department used that for any distance learning needs as well.

i wouldnt be surprised if zoom uses amazon/some other provider for their servers. benefit of that is you can just ask them to spin up more

My school requires us to use zoom with no alternative. Is there anyway to access the streams without actually using zoom client?

Yes, try the Zoom Redirector browser extension.

Obviously you shouldn't run Zoom, even in your browser, but if you feel like the alternative is installing their hopelessly insecure malware local client, then it'll be an improvement.

Edit: A lesser evil if you will.
