open source hardware ereaders do not exist AFAIK, unless you wanted to roll your own. as far as software I think there's replacement firmware for the kobo, which I have with stock firmware. I really like kobo, you can add any kind of eBook to it, and I keep the WiFi off

I have a Kobo Clara HD. Two of the big deciding factors for me were that it has a backlight that can be fully turned off (I think a similar kindle model can't) and there is a blue light filter on that backlight.

I have the kindle paperwhite, which seems to be the same genre of reader as the clara hd. I think I'll try that one.

Yes via calibre, which is the de facto libre e-book management software. Pretty simple IMO.

Yo I already had calibre, but hadn't used at all. This shit is dope. I've been fuckin around with it for a bit. Got all my pdfs to mobi now for the shit amazon. But once I check out this Kobo I'll start doing epub.
