I think having a Democrat in prominent office is good for propagandizing-- anddd there's the fact that they're objectively less bad than Republicans. Just objectively. Even if the margin is very small, it's there. Meager, half-hearted action on climate change is significantly better than no action and active denialism from the state.

If the goal is power in electoral politics, third parties are literally useless in the US. The best they can do is a few seats here and there, but not enough to have any power. The only way to make the prospect of a third party better is to enact better voting legislation (rank-choice or whatever). Democrats are more amicable to this than Republicans.

For now, it seems the best option for electoral power is to have principled leftists in the Democratic party. I really like the DSA's take here.

The DSA cough has over 200,000 members cough and the Trotskist parties? ... much less.

IMO direct action and protest + electoralism within Dems (for now) looks like the best way to do this in the US. Worker's party is for another day.
